Dr. Bui Tran Phuong was born in 1950 to a family who for many generations followed a teaching career. She inherited the virtues of an educator from her family members and has followed in their footsteps. She graduated from a French high-school program at the level of “Standard of Excellence” and then moved to Paris, France in 1968 to attend college. In 1972 she received a Bachelor’s degree in History from Paris I University, a Master’s degree from Paris VII University in 1994, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from United Business Institutes (Belgium) in 2003, and in 2008 she successfully defended her Doctoral dissertation at Lyon 2 University in Lyon, France.
From 1972 to 1975, Dr. Phuong taught at Marie Curie high-school and also at Can Tho University as a part-time lecturer. From 1975 to 1991 she worked at Pedagogy University of Ho Chi Minh City as Head of the Department of Vietnam History and as Vice-head of the School of History. She began working at Hoa Sen University in 1991 and since then has held the following positions : Head of the French Language Department, Head of the Office Management Department, and Vice-president in charge of International Affairs. In 1996 she was appointed to and presently is the President of Hoa Sen University.
As President of Hoa Sen University, Dr. Phuong has set in place several plans to develop Hoa Sen University into a sustainable university. As a result of the process of enhancing the school’s scale and educational quality, Hoa Sen has grown from an occupational training school, when it was first established as a college, into a full fledged university as of December 2006. A team of intellectuals that were trained in various countries is contributing to Hoa Sen’s development. All of its lecturers who hold doctoral degrees are graduates of overseas institutions.
Dr. Bui Tran Phuong considered her largest and most meaningful achievement the gathering of educators from diverse backgrounds who dedicated their entire life to education ; many of them are also entrepreneurs, foreign professors, Viet Kieu (overseas Vietnamese), and young graduates from overseas institutions.
From 1975 to 1992, her research projects mainly focused on Vietnam’s contemporary history. From 1992 to the present, she has focused on in-depth research of cultural history and most especially on the history of Vietnamese women. The title of Dr. Phuong’s doctoral dissertation is ‘Vietnam 1920-1945, Gender and Modernity : The Emergence of New Perceptions and Experience’.
Research is her passion which has been nurtured by her living experience. She once said ‘the broader a person’s knowledge the more forgiving and kind one can be to life and to people.’ Her viewpoint is that ‘The sea of learning is borderless, human beings are so diverse and that is why unchanged knowledge is dead knowledge.’ She never stops assigning more difficult requirements to herself for logical thinking, for painstakingly gathering research data, and for carefully analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating data … Therefore, Dr. Bui Tran Phuong’s research projects are highly valued by international academics because they are imbued with new knowledge and inovative methods.
