Women and Wars in Việt Nam - A New Approach to Study Gender Relationships

A new approach to stu­dying women and gender rela­tion­ships in the context of war and post-war is desi­ra­ble and timely fol­lo­wing more than one-third of a cen­tury after the end of long, devas­ta­ting and com­plex wars in Việt Nam. I am sug­ges­ting such an approach after being ins­pi­red by the achie­ve­ments of inter­na­tio­nal research on these topics.

Concerning the gathe­ring of infor­ma­tion, I will res­trict myself to lite­rary, artis­tic and oral sour­ces. Without any intent to per­form a review or an eva­lua­tion, I will limit myself to sug­ges­ting ques­tions, tra­cking ana­ly­ses, and ope­ra­ting only within the three sour­ces. As a way to evoke a res­ponse, I would like to sound the alert regar­ding the urgent need to col­lect and archive oral sour­ces that are at risk for get­ting lost fore­ver. I also want to draw atten­tion to the poten­tial of a wealth of infor­ma­tion for his­to­rians and socio­lo­gists repre­sen­ted by the use of lite­rary and artis­tic resour­ces such as pro­duc­tions by the press and other media such as radio and tele­vi­sion, as well as the use of per­so­nal and fami­lial archi­ves.

It goes without saying that authen­ti­city and rele­vance remains the most impor­tant com­po­nent of research in Việt Nam to ensure that scien­ti­fic qua­lity meets inter­na­tio­nal stan­dards. The idea of for­ming trans­na­tio­nal teams and per­for­ming trans­na­tio­nal research is our aim from Hoa Sen University at crea­ting condi­tions that will ensure com­pliance with these stan­dards.

Về nguồn tư liệu chúng tôi tự giới hạn ở hai nguồn chủ yếu là văn học nghệ thuật và nhân chứng. Không có ý định tổng kết, đánh giá, chúng tôi chỉ gợi một số hướng tra vấn, phân tích và khai thác. Qua đó, muốn cảnh báo về tính cấp thiết của việc bắt tay thu thập, lưu trữ những nguồn tài liệu truyền khẩu (oral sour­ces) có nguy cơ mất vĩnh viễn và lưu ý về tiềm năng còn rất lớn cho các nhà sử học, xã hội học khai thác từ nguồn tài liệu văn học, báo chí, điện ảnh, truyền thanh, truyền hình, cũng như từ lưu trữ cá nhân và gia đình...

Tất nhiên, điều quan trọng nhứt đối với nghiên cứu ở Việt Nam vẫn là tính chân xác và được kiểm nghiệm đủ chuẩn khoa học. Ý tưởng về việc hình thành các nhóm nghiên cứu xuyên quốc gia và về nghiên cứu xuyên quốc gia là nhằm bảo đảm chuẩn mực đó.
