This paper explores some of Judith Butler’s concepts, especially her notion of gender performative as situated within poststructuralist thinking. According to Butler, gender identity does not reside outside of the subject, but is constituted by the historical and repetitive performances of the gendered subject. Identity, therefore, is not an unchanged essence of the woman, and there always exists a slippage between the imagination of a feminine identity and the performances that are said to emanate from that identity. The emancipation of the woman from the repressive social and cultural institutions, from the imagined feminine identity itself, should be then located in women’s performances. In Butler’s feminist politics, the woman is perceived as possessing the potential to resignify what is designated as her identity. In other words, through her performances, the woman can destabilize and subvert the historical definitions of femininity and create new meanings for her emancipation.
On grounds of Butler’s feminist politics, I analyze the literary and filmic representation of the woman in some Vietnamese works about the Vietnam War. I argue that an emancipation that relies on the resignification of femininity might not be effective, because as is shown in those works, the suppressive economy of gender also relies on resignification for its own reproduction. Contrary to the common belief that there is a feminine identity that needs change to create new possibilities for the woman subject, I suggest that power itself does not suppress through some unchanged essence or identity, but through its own resignification that is contingent upon emerging cultural and political conditions. This is most clearly reflected in the transition from the traditional Confucian woman to the modern woman in war.
