Living after violence… the experiences of women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

This paper will dis­cuss the expe­rien­ces of women in periods of “post-conflict” in the Great Lakes Region of Africa (and par­ti­cu­larly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo). We will exa­mine the ways in which women have been mili­tants for peace, and how they have attemp­ted to recons­truct their lives and to ensure their secu­rity (at once phy­si­cal, eco­no­mic and psy­cho­lo­gi­cal) after the expe­rien­ces of vio­lence, forced dis­pla­ce­ment, resis­tance or active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in com­bats, which they have tra­ver­sed. How do these women seek to find “jus­tice” or “reconci­lia­tion” ? What are the forms and means of reconci­lia­tion and recons­truc­tion adop­ted by women, and do their stra­te­gies for peace buil­ding differ from those of men ? And how are gender rela­tions which have been pro­foundly trans­for­med in and by conflicts, rebuilt and adap­ted ? The paper which is based on inter­views with women who have lived through conflicts and have par­ti­ci­pa­ted in post-conflict “recons­truc­tion”, will show the para­doxi­cal nature of the notion of “recons­truc­tion” for women, for whom the idea of a return to the une­qual gender rela­tions of the “pre-conflict” period is unthin­ka­ble, whilst the obs­ta­cles to the cons­truc­tion of more equal forms of gender rela­tions remain nume­rous.

Vivre après les violences... Les expériences des femmes en République Démocratique du Congo

L’inter­ven­tion trai­tera des expé­rien­ces des femmes dans des pério­des de « post-conflit » dans la Région des Grands Lacs en Afrique (et en par­ti­cu­lier en République Démocratique du Congo). Nous exa­mi­ne­rons com­ment les femmes mili­tent pour la paix et com­ment elles essaient de recons­truire leurs vies et d’assu­rer leur sécu­rité (phy­si­que, économique et psy­cho­lo­gi­que) après les expé­rien­ces de vio­len­ces subies, des dépla­ce­ments forcés, de la résis­tance ou des par­ti­ci­pa­tions acti­ves aux conflits. Comment cher­chent-elles à retrou­ver la « jus­tice » ou la « réconci­lia­tion » ? Quelles sont les formes de la réconci­lia­tion ou de la recons­truc­tion adop­tées par les femmes, et est-ce que ces stra­té­gies dif­fè­rent de celles des hommes ? Et com­ment recons­truire et adap­ter les rap­ports de genre qui ont été pro­fon­dé­ment trans­for­més par et dans les conflits ? Cette inter­ven­tion basée sur des entre­tiens avec des femmes qui ont vécues les conflits mon­tre­rai les para­doxes des notions de « recons­truc­tion » post-conflit pour les femmes, pour qui un retour à des rap­ports de genre de « pré-conflit » est impos­si­ble et pour qui les obs­ta­cles à l’émergence des rap­ports plus égaux sont nom­breux.
