The war’s heroine holds a specific place in the movie theater according to the nature of films and/or their date of production. Most of the time, women are confined to the second plan,as background figure or in the sentimental sphere to spare them a direct compromising with violence, on the model of Westerns until the fifties, that is to say : The Great Illusion (J. Renoir, 1937) ; Rome open city (R. Rossellini, 1945) ; Times to love and times to die (Dr Sirk, 1958) etc. Later, women have taken up more place and they put riding amazon habit.
It is a matter to take occidental films as a model, and to identify female persons with their function and their use in films of fiction. They are often linked with the underground strength (running a risk) of the Resistance, Women have entered into the action films, among them : The forty and one (Tchoukhrai,1956) ; The skin, (Liliana Cavani, 1980) ; as a symbol of the heroic resistance of a society (Lucy Aubrac) or competent in the subject (strategic, technic) to rebel against the stereotype of « the sensitive woman » whose titles are : The Commissioner, Army in the shadow... To the very end of the war, in her last avatars, she is at the center of the violent action (Niki, Lara Croft) for the State service. If women have, from this time, found their place in the warrior modernity, however, they are still keeping a specific status. To proof of it, this unbelievable processing : a put-up job by United-States to exfiltrate that young american girl soldier at the time of the Gulf war which gave rise to an extraordinary repercussion and followed up to several fictions on TV.
Like all minorities, women emerge as warrior role in movies such as a « different cinema » concerning the Indians, the Black American, the homosexuals and other ethnic minorities groups, politic or religious appeared in the sixties / seventies. The warrior woman is out of her logistic role against the traditional masculine assignation, to prove to her audience her incredible efficacy as a fighter.
Time to love and Time to die, (D. Sirk,1958) etc.
