During the war against America in Vietnam, a large amount of highly poisonous dioxin was sprayed over huge regions in the central and the south of Vietnam, causing environmental pollution, cancer and other diseases, especially several serious effects on female reproduction and children’s health.
In this paper, we present the research results from a project conducted over a period of five years on nearly 200 families of Agent Orange victims by the Research Center of Gender, Family and Environment in Development (CGFED). Research data was collected from 21 communes in 18 districts in 11 provinces/cities in the North, South and Central Vietnam. The research goal was to learn about the impact of this toxic chemical on people’s lives. Qualitative in-depth interviews and a life history approach were used in the research to track the reproductive lives of women who were victims of dioxin or those whose husbands were affected by dioxin. The life history approach was aimed to collect data on the pregnancy of the women, health problems of the children, and the living experiences of children with disabilities. Most of the families were poor ; the husbands were sick, children were not well taken care of, and wives always felt guilty and inferior.
The effects caused by dioxin were very severe in many aspects of their lives including human health, environment, economy, culture, physical and mental status, and psychological conditions… Despite support from the Vietnam government, social organizations, charity organizations from Vietnam and foreign countries who have provided hundreds of thousands of victims with health care and a better quality of life, the long-lasting effects of dioxin are still a heavy burden on the shoulders of numerous women, children and their families.
